Robert Harrison Allen, Sr., 91, of Pennybyrn at Maryfield, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 13, 2018.

Mr. Allen was born December 29, 1926, in High Point, NC to the late Thomas R. Allen, Sr. and the late Frances Eva Allen.  He graduated from High Point High School, and as a youth, he worked at the concession stand during High Point College Panther’s football games.  Bob also had three delivery routes for the High Point Enterprise.  He was with the Enterprise when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec.7, 1941, at which time “Extras” were sold to the public.  Bob worked in the family business, Allen Sign Co.  In 1944, he joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served aboard the ammunition ship, Mt. Katmai, in the South Pacific during WWII.  After WWII, Mr. Allen came back to High Point and attended High Point College (High Point University) where he was on one of the last football teams.  After college, Bob went to work at Allen Sign Co.  In 1957, he left the family business and formed, along with his late brother Tom, Andco Industries, a national manufacturer of architectural sign systems.  Bob retired from the business in 2003.

Mr. Allen married the love of his life, Dixie Lee Garner in 1948 who precedes him in death.  He is also survived by one daughter, Linda Gleason and her husband, Keith, of High Point; one son, Robert Allen, Jr. and his wife, Alice, of Charlotte; his four grandchildren, Kevin Gleason and wife Sarah, and Heather Steele and husband Tyler, and Harrison and Katherine Allen; his great-grandchildren, Jadyn Gleason, Kyndall & Nolan Steele; and one sister, Frances Boyles.

In 1953, Mr. Allen helped form and was a charter member of the High Point YMCA Y’s Men’s Club International, where he was a member up till his death.  He served as President, Vice-President, Y’s Man of Year, and President of the H.P. Metropolitan YMCA board.  While serving as President in 1981-1982, the new YMCA on Hartley Dr. was built.  In 1983, Bob was one of the first to be inducted into the YMCA Hall of Honor.  He served as chairman of the YMCA Membership Campaign in 1955 and worked on the “Friends of Youth” campaign until his death.  Bob helped form the Midget League Basketball teams in 1953 with the Y’s Men Club.  He served 45 years as a volunteer basketball coach, the first year in 1954 until retiring in 2000.  He was also one of the early members of the YMCA Heritage Club, which is set up as an endowment to help deserving boys and girls at Camp Cheerio & YMCA Memberships.  Bob was co-founder of Camp Cheerio, located in Roaring Gap, NC.  Along with the Y’s Men’s Club, land was purchased and a master site plan was implemented.  The rest is history.

Other accomplishments include: serving as Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School superintendent, teacher, Brotherhood president, Treasurer, Charter member and first president in 1966 of the High Point Gideon’s International, numerous positions in the Gideon’s, served N.C. as co-chairman of state Gideon convention, and in 1967 Bob was chosen as “High Pointer of the Week”.  Mr. Allen also served on the board of trustees for 25 years at Wingate University, board of trustees for Central Triad Baptist Association, served 40 years at Christ for the World in Orlando, FL, and served three years at the High Point YMCA.

Bob Allen was a member of Life on Lexington Church (formerly Lexington Ave. Baptist Church) and during a Revival in 1958, he received Christ as Savior and Lord of his life.  He has served Christ faithfully until his death.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be conducted at Green Street Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 16, 2018, with Pastor Deon Parker officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday at Green Street Baptist Church and other times at the home of Linda Gleason.
